BRISTOL, TN- The Orange Caravan rolled into the last great Colosseum Tuesday night, with head football coach Butch Jones and head men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes. The two met with fans in the infield, but not before giving Bristol a test drive.
“I got a chance to drive around the track and I’m coming back,” said Barnes. “I’ve got a newfound respect for all those NASCAR guys.”
The Volunteer basketball team will have a familiar face this season, with former Dobyns-Bennett Indian John Fulkerson joining the Orange.
“As a coaching staff, when we got here and we first met John and got to know him, got to see him play, he was a major target for us,” Barnes said. “We’re just elated that he’s part of our program.”
The focus Tuesday was on Jones and the Vol’s football team, as the next time Jones and the Vols stop at Bristol Motor Speedway, it will be in front of the biggest crowd ever for a college football game.
“Going to be a unique experience I think for our fans, obviously our players,” Jones said. “To be a part of something, the biggest ever, it’s something very very special. This is why you come to the University of Tennessee.”
The football team is currently ranked 5th in the nation this preseason, but Jones isn’t giving that too much thought.
“Team 120 has not accomplished one thing,” said Jones. “We have not taken one snap. But I do like what I see so far.”
