An investigation by Yancey County authorities has led to the discovery of an underground marijuana grow operation.
The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office says investigators executed a search warrant at an underground bunker in the Green Mountain community on Monday, February 4 and found “an elaborate hydroponic grow operation.” The bunker contained 259 marijuana plants and several bags of harvested marijuana weighing 128 pounds, worth about $300,000 on the street according to the sheriff’s office.
YCSO says the bunker was camouflaged by a garage on the property.
Sheriff’s investigators say a second search warrant executed at another property owned by the same person resulted in the discovery of another 158 grams of pot.
The owner, identified as Jeremy James LaMotte, 45 of the Newdale community, was arrested and charged with several crimes, including two counts of felony marijuana trafficking and felony manufacture of a controlled substance.
LaMotte was released on a total bond amount of $20,000. He’s due in court February 20.
