WWE wrestler Glenn "Kane" Jacobs becomes Knox County's next mayor

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - Former WWE wrestler, Republican Glenn Jacobs, has been declared the winner of the race for Knox County mayor.

Early and absentee votes showed Jacobs with a commanding 2-1 lead over Democrat Linda Haney.

Both of the candidates expressed optimism about winning on Thursday night, but it's going to be a tough battle for Haney to pull off an upset against Jacobs.

Jacobs is known in a different arena, as a very popular wrestler with the stage name of "Kane." He told WATE 6 On Your Side reporter Don Dare he knows what it's like to be an underdog.

"In my primary, I only won by 23 votes in that one, so every vote really does count and I want to make sure I get as many as I possibly can," said Jacobs. "Since May, we've been knocking on doors, continuing that. We've also continued the process of meeting with department heads, school board, county commissioners, that kind of thing."

Haney said if Jacobs can pull off an upset in May, perhaps she could n this election.

"I'm just going in with the idea that anything can happen. And so we'll wait for the numbers, and win or lose, I'm not going to fall into a corner and curl up. I'm going to go on and help the candidates that go on to November, or I'm going to become mayor. One or the other," said Haney.
