One eastbound lane now open; westbound lanes open on U.S. 58 after tractor trailer crash

ST. PAUL, Va. (WJHL) - UPDATE 11:35 A.M.

Wise County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that one eastbound lane of Highway 58 in St. Paul has open.

Emergency crews pulled the tractor trailer out of the Clinch River this morning.

Russell County Emergency Management Director Jess Powers told News Channel 11 that a tractor trailer lost it's brakes striking three vehicles before plunging into the Clinch River on U.S. 58.

UPDATE 5:30 A.M.

Emergency crews pulled the tractor trailer out of the Clinch River this morning.

Russell County Emergency Management Director Jess Powers told News Channel 11 that a tractor trailer lost it's brakes striking three vehicles before plunging into the Clinch River on U.S. 58. 

Emergency crews were able to get the truck out of the river but the cargo the truck was hauling remains.

Both westbound lanes are open but both eastbound lanes remain closed at this time.

FIRST UPDATE

Russell County Emergency Management Director Jess Powers says it will likely take all night for crews to cleanup a tractor trailer crash in St. Paul, Va. 

Powers says westbound lanes of U.S. Route 58 have been reopened, but eastbound lanes remain closed. He believes they will reopen sometime Friday morning. 

Powers also tells News Channel 11 the driver the tractor trailer who was flown to a hospital is expected to be discharged overnight. He says the driver suffered injuries to his wrist and ribs.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a crash in St. Paul involving a tractor-trailer and several other vehicles. Multiple injuries have been reported. 

Russell County Emergency Management Director Jess Powers says U.S. Route 58 is currently closed in St. Paul. 

Powers tells News Channel 11 a tractor-trailer lost its brakes and struck three cars before plunging into the Clinch River and catching fire. 

At this time, firefighters are still working to put out the fire. 

Powers says the truck driver managed to escape the truck and crawl from the wreckage. He was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center. The extent of his injuries are unknown. 

At least three other people have been taken to a hospital, according to Powers, but he describes their injures as minor. 

He says it will likely take several hours to clean up the crash scene and reopen the U.S. 58.
