Sullivan County jail inmate dies after found unresponsive in cell

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - A Sullivan County jail inmate was taken to the hospital Saturday, where she died, according to a lieutenant at the sheriff’s office.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Andy Seabolt said an inmate was found on the floor in a shower area with a sheet tied around her neck, with the other end attached to a shower chair.

Seabolt said CPR was performed on the inmate and a pulse was found. The inmate, identified as Heather Stapleton, died at the hospital, according to Seabolt.

Stapleton had been booked into the jail Oct. 1 on charges of criminal trespassing and aggravated assault.

District Attorney General Barry Staubus was notified of the incident. Sheriff’s investigators will turn over their findings to Staubus once complete.

Seabolt noted that nothing about the death is considered suspicious at this time.
