School consolidation plan at the center of the Sullivan County mayor's race

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- - One of the topics centered around the Sullivan County mayor's race is the current school consolidation plan.

Incumbent mayor Richard Venable will be up against former Dallas Cowboys football player Gerald Sensabaugh.

At the focus of the campaign is a multi-million dollar school consolidation plan.

It's a project Sensabaugh said he would rather have delayed.

"You know  my stance on that is I would rather see the school called off for right now until we have proper planning," Sensabaugh said. "I'm really fighting for more resources, more educational resources, equality in education nis really big on my platform. I want all kids to receive the same education, no matter if you're a city resident or county resident."

But Mayor Venable said it's a plan that needs to move forward.

"Well we have many challenges, we are dealing with the school, the new school plan and the continuation of it," Venable said. "The school board has made recommendations and we will get to the point where we are going to have to look three to two more years in the future."

News Channel 11's Caroline Corrigan found out how much each candidate has spent on their campaign.

According to documents on file at the Sullivan County Election Commission, so far Venable has spent $4,928 on his campaign and Sensabaugh has spent nothing.

However, officials from the Sullivan County Election Commission said Sensabaugh failed to file his second quarter finance disclosure, the deadline was Tuesday.

He has five days to file it before he starts receiving fines.

When we reached out to Sensabaugh regarding the deadline, he said the amount would be the same for the second quarter, with no expenditures.
