Potential for heavy snow in Tri-Cities region this weekend; Here is our latest forecast

TRI-CITIES, TN/VA (WJHL) - Storm impact begins Saturday evening with mainly rain for our region, mixed with snow and sleet in the mountains. 

Precipitation will change to a snow and sleet mix early Sunday morning, likely to all snow around sunrise Sunday. 

Accumulation rates will range from around a half inch to an inch per hour through Sunday morning.  Snow rates will likely be higher in the mountains, around 1 to 2-inch accumulation per hour.  Main accumulation will likely be through Sunday morning, tapering off during the day, with an additional accumulation possible Sunday night into Monday of an additional 1 to 2 inches. 

Accumulation will range from around 3 to 6 inches for Tri-Cities, with 5 to 10” in SW VA, and 12 to 18 inches in the mountains. 

The snow will contain a higher moisture content, making it a heavier and wet snow, which makes traveling even more challenging. 

Despite some fluctuation in the totals, this will be a HIGH impact storm Sunday.
