Man slips, falls 20-30 feet off cliff in Saltville, VA

SALTVILLE, VA (WJHL)- A Southwest Virginia man suffered only minor injuries to his arm after falling approximately 20-30 feet off a cliff in Saltville Sunday evening.

According to Saltville Police Chief, Erik Puckett, a juvenile was in the old section of the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville near a cliff that overlooks the N. Fork for the Holston River when an adult came to check on the juvenile.

At that time the adult, identified as a 41-year-old male, slipped and fell 20 to 30 feet off the cliff.

Puckett estimates its about a 50-foot drop from the top of the cliff to the river.

At that time the juvenile went down to check on the adult, and also became stuck.

Puckett said a second juvenile came to the adult's rescue from the bottom of the cliff, and got stuck as well.

Rescue crews from multiple agencies were called to the scene around 5:30p.m. including Saltville PD, the Smyth County Sheriff's Office, Chilhowie PD, and both rescue crews from Saltville and Chilhowie.

Authorities say it was Sergeant Michael Lowe with the Smyth County Sheriffs Office that lowered down to both the adult and two juveniles with a rope.

At that point Sergeant Lowe was able to get them another 20 feet down the cliff to a raft, where all three individuals were ultimately brought to safety.

We're told the adult male was taken to a nearby emergency room for minor injuries to his arm.

Both juveniles were checked out only as a precautionary measure.
