Corker, Alexander support Kavanaugh; Kaine still opposes

WASHINGTON (WJHL) - Tennessee's two U.S. Senators both announced their support for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, but one of Virginia's senators says he still opposes the nomination.

In statements issued Thursday evening, Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) and Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said they will vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

The statements come after Kavanaugh and the woman who accuses him of sexually assaulting her decades ago appeared before lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

“While both individuals provided compelling testimony, nothing that has been presented corroborates the allegation," Corker said in a statement. “There is no question that Judge Kavanaugh is qualified to serve on the Supreme Court, and in a different political environment, he would be confirmed overwhelmingly."

Alexander also announced his support for the nominee, saying, “I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh because of his 26 years of distinguished public service and his reputation as a superior jurist, lawyer and teacher."

“Judge Kavanaugh denies under oath Dr. Ford’s account of an alleged incident 36 years ago," Alexander said. "The FBI has conducted six background investigations of Judge Kavanaugh since that alleged incident and found no such conduct."

Meanwhile, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine said he found Ford's testimony "courageous and believable" and called on Republicans to wait until the accusations are investigated further.

"All this suggests that any rush to a vote would be a huge mistake and the Judiciary Committee and FBI should complete a full investigation of these serious charges," Kaine said in a statement. "Will my colleagues stand up to undertake the serious duty of exercising advise and consent? Will my colleagues make plain to the public that charges of sexual assault cannot be swept under the rug?”

Kaine announced earlier this month that he will oppose Judge Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court.
