Church Hill man dies in Friday night crash in Kingsport

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) - A Church Hill man is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle and SUV Friday night in Kingsport.

Kingsport police say the crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on Union Street at the intersection with Greenway Street.

Police say a white 2001 GMC Yukon was eastbound on Greenway street preparing to turn left onto Union Street. At the same time, a black Yamaha R1 turned off West Stone Drive and was southbound on Union Street.

We're told as the GMC pulled forward into the intersection, the Yamaha topped a hill and hit the driver's side of the GMC.

The driver of the motorcycle was identified by police as 26-year-old Johnny D. Berry of Church Hill. Police say he was seriously hurt in the crash and taken to Holston Valley Medical Center where he later died.

Police say based on evidence at the scene and eye-witness accounts, the Yamaha was driving at a high speed, and the front wheel was off the ground as the driver crested the hill before the crash.

The driver and passenger in the Yukon were not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kingsport Police Department.
