Anthony Flaccavento wins Democratic nomination for Virginia's 9th Congressional District

ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) -The ballots are set for Virginia elections in November, in races that will be watched around the country.

Tuesday night was primary night in Virginia and News Channel 11 is In Your Corner with results and reaction.

We begin with the United States Congressional race in Southwest Virginia.

Ninth District Congressman Morgan Griffith didn't face a Republican challenged for the party's nomination.

But two Democrats think it's time for change.

Anthony Flaccavento and Justin Santopietro competed for the nomination, but it wasn't close.

Democratic voters overwhelmingly chose Flaccavento. He received almost 79% of the vote.

Flaccavento celebrated with his supported at Morgan's in downtown Abingdon.

Music filled the room in the restaurant Tuesday night.

Flaccavento telling us he's ready for November, and has dozens of town halls planned for the coming months to continue to interact with the community - saying he's fighting to level the playing field for the people of Southwest Virginia.

"Working people, school teachers, coal miners, so many other people just get left behind, they get neglected, the rules of the game don't work for them. I think folks are sick of that. They want change that will allow people to actually have a shot at having a good life," Flaccavento said.

We also spoke to incumbent Morgan Griffith.

Griffith said he expected that Flaccavento would win the Democratic nomination.

But Griffith said he himself is inline with the philosophy of the people of Southwest Virginia in a district he still feels is conservative.

"I think that particularly in light of the trend by national democrats to be anti-coal, to be pro-regulation, to be pro-big government, anti-tax cuts, that's not going to sell. Most people want to work hard and keep their money and send as little as they have to do Washington D.C.," Griffith said.

Flaccavento tells us he's raised nearly $250,000 so far in his campaign.

This isn't the first time he's taken on Morgan Griffith, he also ran against him in 2012, but lost.
