VDH: 4 new COVID-19 deaths in SWVA, 133 new local cases

This chart shows a rapid rise in Southwest Virginia’s 14-day trend of average daily reported COVID-19 deaths — led by spikes in Wise and Smyth counties.

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) – Southwest Virginia counties reported 133 new COVID-19 cases and 4 new deaths Friday according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).  

Tazewell County reported 2 new deaths. Lee and Wise Counties reported a new death each.

Smyth County reported one less death than it had on Thursday.

Statewide, VDH reported 191,971 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth on Friday.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 213,331.

VDH reports there have been 3,605 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

VDH reported Friday morning that there are 13,666 confirmed hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and 248 probable virus-related hospitalizations.

Note: VDH does not report whether cases are active or recovered. County and community case totals can include active, recovered, confirmed and probable cases.

Bristol, Va. – 473 cases / 26 hospitalizations/ 7 deaths (14 new cases)
Buchanan County – 359 cases / 19 hospitalizations/ 5 deaths (8 new cases)
Dickenson County – 233 cases / 12 hospitalizations/ 1 death (4 new cases)
Lee County – 783 cases / 43 hospitalizations/ 12 deaths (6 new cases/ 1 new death)
Norton – 65 cases / 5 hospitalizations
Russell County – 733 cases / 53 hospitalizations / 8 deaths (4 new cases)
Scott County – 672 cases / 42 hospitalizations / 12 deaths (13 new cases/ 2 new hospitalizations)
Smyth County – 898 cases / 63 hospitalizations / 36 deaths (11 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization/ -1 new death)
Tazewell County – 878 cases/ 41 hospitalizations/ 6 deaths (32 new cases/ 3 new hospitalizations/ 2 new deaths)
Washington County, Va. – 1,544 cases / 113 hospitalizations / 29 deaths (23 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Wise County – 1,097 cases / 56 hospitalizations / 32 deaths (18 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization/ 1 new death)

The Virginia Department of Health does not report recoveries from the virus.
