Local Coronavirus Coverage

COVID-19 hospitalization rates in Southwest Virginia have reached their lowest point since late November.

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) — Southwest Virginia counties reported 67 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths Tuesday, according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Rates of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths all continue to drop in the News Channel 11 eight-county viewing area. The 14-day rolling average of new daily hospitalizations fell below five for the first time since late November.

The new daily death numbers have fallen sharply as well since they peaked Jan. 27.

And the 14-day average number of new daily cases has decreased steadily since Jan. 9. Its current rate of 70.86 equates to a “community spread rate” — new daily cases per 100,000 population — of 28.5. That’s about a third of the rate just a month ago.

Smyth County reported three new deaths, while Washington County reported one.

Statewide, VDH reported 425,066 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 534,116.

VDH reports there have been 5,932 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

Note: VDH does not report whether cases are active or recovered. County and community case totals can include active, recovered, confirmed and probable cases.
