VDH: 3 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Southwest Virginia, 221 new cases

COVID community spread rates in Southwest Virginia dipped briefly over the holidays but are back near their record highs.

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) — Southwest Virginia counties reported 221 new COVID-19 cases and three new deaths Friday, according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Smyth, Wise and Washington Counties each reported one new death on Friday.

Statewide, VDH reported 321,172 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 387,917.

VDH reports there have been 4,681 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

Note: VDH does not report whether cases are active or recovered. County and community case totals can include active, recovered, confirmed and probable cases.

Bristol, Va. – 1,031 cases / 51 hospitalizations/ 8 deaths (7 new cases)
Buchanan County – 940 cases / 66 hospitalizations/ 23 deaths (5 new cases/ 3 new hospitalizations)
Dickenson County – 718 cases / 26 hospitalizations/ 6 deaths (2 new cases)
Lee County – 1,669 cases / 75 hospitalizations/ 32 deaths (37 new cases/ 3 new hospitalizations)
Norton – 192 cases / 10 hospitalizations/ 1 death (10 new cases)
Russell County – 1,685 cases / 96 hospitalizations / 19 deaths (4 new cases)
Scott County – 1,307 cases / 88 hospitalizations / 37 deaths (14 new cases)
Smyth County – 2,028 cases / 135 hospitalizations / 58 deaths (39 new cases/ 6 new hospitalizations/ 1 new death)
Tazewell County – 2,634 cases/ 100 hospitalizations/ 24 deaths (14 new cases/ 3 new hospitalizations)
Washington County, Va. – 3,336 cases / 220 hospitalizations / 56 deaths (49 new cases/ 3 new hospitalizations/ 1 new death)
Wise County – 2,289 cases / 120 hospitalizations / 64 deaths (40 new cases/ 1 new death)

The Virginia Department of Health does not report recoveries from the virus.
