VDH: 276 new COVID-19 cases, 3 new deaths reported in Southwest Virginia

13 new hospitalizations highest daily total in weeks

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 276 new COVID-19 cases in Southwest Virginia on Wednesday.

VDH also reported three new deaths from the virus — one in Scott County and two in Tazewell County. And 13 new hospitalizations were reported.

Community spread rates are 63% higher in the nine-county region than statewide. They are highest in Tazewell and Russell counties, where they’re both above 600 new weekly cases per 100,000 population.

The regional rate is 451 and the state rate is 276.

VDH reported 600,446 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth on Sept. 8.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 793,396.

VDH reports there have been 10,120 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

Norton – 391 cases / 20 hospitalizations / 8 deaths (7 new cases)
Russell County – 2,802 cases / 142 hospitalizations / 42 deaths (24 new cases)
Scott County – 2,333 cases / 149 hospitalizations / 66 deaths (26 new cases, 1 new hospitalization, 1 new death)
Smyth County – 3,521 cases / 227 hospitalizations / 97 deaths (40 new cases, 1 new hospitalization)
Tazewell County – 4,564 cases / 205 hospitalizations / 83 deaths (45 new cases, 3 new hospitalizations, 2 new deaths)
Washington County, Va. – 6,091 cases / 478 hospitalizations / 118 deaths (57 new cases, 3 new hospitalizations)
Wise County – 3,983 cases / 199 hospitalizations / 111 deaths (32 new cases, 1 new hospitalization)
