VDH: 117 new COVID-19 cases in SWVA, no new deaths

The 14-day average of new daily hospitalizations in far Southwest Virginia is at its highest level yet after 10 new hospitalizations were reported Dec. 1.

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) – Southwest Virginia counties reported 117 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths Tuesday according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). 

With 10 new hospitalizations reported, the region reached its highest 14-day average of new daily COVID hospitalizations, at 5.64.

Monday’s report was the third time double-digit hospitalizations have been recorded. All have been since Nov. 11 and two have been in the past five days.

Washington County reported the largest case increase with 21 new cases.

Statewide, VDH reported 212,916 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 240,063.

VDH reports there have been 3,750 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

VDH reported Tuesday morning that there are 14,411 confirmed hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and 314 probable virus-related hospitalizations.

Note: VDH does not report whether cases are active or recovered. County and community case totals can include active, recovered, confirmed and probable cases.

Bristol, Va. – 540 cases / 28 hospitalizations/ 7 deaths (7 new cases)
Buchanan County – 431 cases / 23 hospitalizations/ 6 deaths (8 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Dickenson County – 274 cases / 13 hospitalizations/ 1 death (6 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Lee County – 952 cases / 46 hospitalizations/ 14 deaths (19 new cases)
Norton – 85 cases / 5 hospitalizations (2 new cases)
Russell County – 817 cases / 61 hospitalizations / 9 deaths (15 new cases/ 2 new hospitalizations)
Scott County – 784 cases / 55 hospitalizations / 14 deaths (4 new cases)
Smyth County – 1,055 cases / 72 hospitalizations / 35 deaths (12 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Tazewell County – 1,088 cases/ 51 hospitalizations/ 7 deaths (9 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Washington County, Va. – 1,777 cases / 125 hospitalizations / 31 deaths (21 new cases/ 4 new hospitalizations)
Wise County – 1,241 cases / 69 hospitalizations / 49 deaths (14 new cases)

The Virginia Department of Health does not report recoveries from the virus.
