VDH: 103 new COVID-19 cases, 3 new deaths reported in Southwest Virginia Friday

New case rate has nearly tripled in past two weeks

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 103 new cases of COVID-19 and three new deaths related to the virus in Southwest Virginia Friday.

The region is averaging 217.6 new weekly cases per 100,000 population, nearly triple the rate of two weeks ago.

Southwest Virginia’s COVID-19 case rate is almost 50% higher than the state’s as a whole.

That is more than double the amount considered “high transmission” by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It’s lower than Northeast Tennessee’s community spread rate, but more than 40% higher than Virginia’s statewide rate of 142.

Statewide, VDH reported 552,624 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 717,826.

VDH reports there have been 9,798 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

Buchanan County – 1,655 cases / 122 hospitalizations / 47 deaths (7 new cases / 1 new death)
Dickenson County – 1,048 cases / 47 hospitalizations / 19 deaths (1 new case)
Lee County – 2,529 cases / 116 hospitalizations / 48 deaths (8 new cases)
Norton – 336 cases / 19 hospitalizations / 7 deaths (2 new cases)
Russell County – 2,404 cases / 135 hospitalizations / 40 deaths (6 new cases)
Scott County – 2,014 cases / 136 hospitalizations / 61 deaths (12 new cases)
Smyth County – 3,124 cases / 210 hospitalizations / 95 deaths (9 new cases)
Tazewell County – 3,939 cases / 193 hospitalizations / 77 deaths (13 new cases / 2 new hospitalizations / 1 new death)
Washington County, Va. – 5,327 cases / 453 hospitalizations / 115 deaths (23 new cases / 1 new hospitalization)
Wise County – 3,510 cases / 189 hospitalizations / 106 deaths (18 new cases / 1 new hospitalization)
