VDH: 10 new COVID-19 deaths in Southwest Virginia, 171 new cases

Southwest Virginia’s 14-day average of new COVID deaths has climbed in January and is approaching its previous high reached in mid-December.

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) — Southwest Virginia counties reported 171 new COVID-19 cases and 10 new deaths Thursday, according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Wise County reported four new deaths, while Russell County reported two new deaths. The City of Norton and Buchanan, Scott and Washington Counties all reported one new death each.

After falling in late December, the 14-day average of new daily reported deaths has climbed back to near its mid-December high.

The new daily hospitalization rate began a steep climb in late December from what were already record levels. That rate climbed again Thursday with 15 new hospitalizations reported.

Statewide, VDH reported 343,304 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 417,839.

VDH reports there have been 4,952 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

Bristol, Va. – 1,078 cases / 56 hospitalizations/ 11 deaths (9 new cases)
Buchanan County – 988 cases / 71 hospitalizations/ 24 deaths (10 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization/ 1 new death)
Dickenson County – 767 cases / 28 hospitalizations/ 11 deaths (6 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Lee County – 1,846 cases / 80 hospitalizations/ 32 deaths (21 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Norton – 214 cases / 14 hospitalizations/ 3 deaths (4 new cases/ 2 new hospitalizations/ 1 new death)
Russell County – 1,805 cases / 100 hospitalizations / 21 deaths (23 new cases/ 2 new hospitalizations/ 2 new deaths)
Scott County – 1,371 cases / 92 hospitalizations / 40 deaths (6 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization/ 1 new death)
Smyth County – 2,158 cases / 144 hospitalizations / 60 deaths (13 new cases)
Tazewell County – 2,779 cases/ 107 hospitalizations/ 28 deaths (31 new cases/ -1 new hospitalization)
Washington County, Va. – 3,537 cases / 242 hospitalizations / 59 deaths (28 new cases/ 7 new hospitalizations/ 1 new death)
Wise County – 2,448 cases / 125 hospitalizations / 71 deaths (20 new cases/ 4 new deaths)

The Virginia Department of Health does not report recoveries from the virus.
