GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - The Greene County Clerk accused of abusing his position obtain sexual favors from employees will be competing against his wife for his job in August.

News Channel 11 learned that Becky Thompson, wife of current Greene County Clerk David Thompson, has turned in her petition to run for the office.
“The decision to become a candidate has been made through a lot of thought and prayers. As the wife of a past candidate and current office holder I put every fiber of my being in to my husband’s past campaigns and supported him in his current position only to be disappointed along with many of you,” said Thompson. “I am asking for everyone’s prayers and support in this endeavor. I need the chance to make something so wrong turn out right for my son, Greene County and myself. I pledge to restore faith and do the right thing for the citizens of Greene County.”

Becky Thompson is one of six candidates running for county clerk, including County Commissioner Jan Kiker. Kiker withdrew her petition to run for county commissioner again, and changed it to county clerk hours after voting "yes" at Tuesday's meeting, for an attorney to further investigate David Thompson.

"This isn't something I just did on a whim, this is something I really discussed with my husband and close friends... it wasn't done just because of the action on February 18th," Kiker said.

Kiker says she decided to switch after fellow commissioner Wade McAmis chose not to file a petition for county clerk.

"I believe that the perception now is not very good, although I have to say Mr. Thompson has done a great job as far as running the office - it's just the other things that have went on in that office - and my wish would be, and my hope would be, to bring honesty and integrity back to that office," Kiker said.

Honestly and integrity, things both she and Thompson's wife agree need a revival.

A total of eight people are running for the position of Greene County Clerk. Click here to see a list of petitions from candidates that have been issued or filed in Greene County.
