KPD issues phone scam alert, victims reportedly being asked for credit card information

Posted: Updated:
KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

The Kingsport Police Department issued a warning about a phone scam Monday, where a man has been reportedly calling multiple people, identifying himself as an employee in the department’s Traffic Division and getting their credit card information.

According to the release, the person reportedly has called numerous people and has identified himself as Traffic Division employee, David Welch.

Victims told police that the man informs them that they have run a red light and that they have received a citation from KPD’s Red Light Camera Enforcement System. He then tells them that they can pay the citation by credit card over the phone and gets the victim’s credit card information.

KPD confirmed in the release that no one by the name of David Welch is employed in the department and said the department does not call citizens to notify them of red light citations. The police department also never asks for credit card information over the phone.

In the release, the KPD warned citizens to not give out confidential information over the phone, unless they can confirm who they are speaking to. If there is any doubt, KPD said for people to verify who they are speaking to or to hang up the call.

Anyone who has received a similar phone call is asked to call Kingsport police at 229-9433.
