KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

News Channel 11 has learned the Volunteer High School student who was involved in a traffic accident in Kingsport last weekend has died.

The Kingsport Police Department is not revealing his name, but they say 17-year-old died at Holston Valley Medical Center Wednesday morning at 11:50 a.m.

Police have now determined that there was a third vehicle involved in that accident. They believe the third vehicle may be responsible for the Saturday afternoon crash.

Patrol officers were called to respond to an accident on Lynn Garden Drive around 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of Echo Avenue.

The Church Hill, TN teen was the driver of the 1989 GMC Jimmy that was heading northbound on Lynn Garden Drive. A 1991 Chevy S-10, driven by a 61-year-old man of Hiltons, VA, was heading in the same direction, but pulled over on the shoulder in front of the GMC. As the GMC continued on, the Chevy pulled from the shoulder in an attempt to make an illegal U-turn and struck the GMC in the passenger’s side.

The impact sent the GMC across the center lane and into the path of a 2009 Pontiac G6 driven a 24-year-old woman from Church Hill, TN.

The 17-year-old boy was taken to Holston Valley Medical Center with critical injuries.

The woman was also taken to the same hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. She has since been released after spending several days in the hospital, according to police.

The third driver was not injured in the crash. Police say charges are pending in this case.
