Bristol Motor Speedway unveils plan for a football battle at the tracks; Vols v. Hokies

Posted: Updated:
BRISTOL, TN (WJHL) -

Bristol Motor Speedway unveiled its plan Monday morning to host a college football game in 2016 between the Tennessee Vols and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Bristol, the world's fastest half-mile oval, is the halfway mark for the teams and sits right off Interstate 81 in Tennessee.

School officials and coaches, from each of the schools, were in attendance- along with officials from the track.

BMS can hold around 160,000 fans.

Organizers hope this venue will help them break the attendance record for college football of 115,109 – set last month at the Michigan Stadium for Michigan-Notre Dame.

10 years ago, Bristol Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith offered the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech $20 million to play a college football game at the track.

Just before announcement of a football game at BMS in 2016, we learned officials from both schools were at the track,  more than a week ago, putting down cones to mark end zones.
