Boy, 8, upset; won't spend birthday in his home after landslide

Posted: Updated:
AVERY COUNTY, NC (WJHL) -

His birthday is in 3 weeks, but an 8 year old boy in our region tells us this will be his saddest birthday ever.  That is because Joshua Thompson will not get to spend his birthday in his home after it was condemned because of a massive landslide in Avery County, North Carolina.

One week ago a landslide wiped out both lanes of Highway 194 near Newland, North Carolina.  It crushed two homes and knocked down five power poles and transformers.  Some of those power poles fell on Joshua's home and because of how close the house is to the landslide, county officials condemned it.

Now Joshua is upset because he will turn nine on August 16th and unlike every other birthday, this year he will not spend any of it in his home.

"We had a lot of memories in that house.  There's nothing in the house now," said Joshua.

The Thompson family also lost two storage buildings in the landslide.  One of those buildings contained all of the family's Christmas ornaments in it.  Joshua says those ornaments were really special to him and he is very sad they are destroyed.

"It was all of our Christmas ornaments. We had them forever," said Joshua.

North Carolina Department of Transportation says they are unsure when Highway 194 will be repaired and if the Thompson's home will be condemned permanently.
