JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

A pair of high-tech eyeglasses that could ultimately help doctors save lives is being used as an instructional tool at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine.

Doctor Martin Olsen, director of the medical residency program in the ETSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was chosen by Google as one of a small number of "explorers" to test the next wave in computers.

It is called Google Glass, and it is basically a pair of eyeglasses that function like a tiny computer.

Doctor Olsen is using the glasses to teach medical residents and students, but he said the new technology could ultimately have life saving uses in the field of medicine.

For example, in the case of a car crash where medical attention is need as soon as possible, but a doctor with the specific knowledge needed to help is not at the scene.

"The EMT needs to be resuscitating the patient, so the EMT can't take pictures and send them back. But, throw these on, hit the buttons, and the ER doctors can watch them resuscitate the patient, and say that person needs a chest tube, stop what you're doing and do the chest tube now," said Olsen.

The glasses are a major advancement in technology that Doctor Olsen hopes will ultimately lead to doctors in the United States helping medical providers in the third world.
