Jonesborough offers American flag retirement drop box

Posted: Updated:

With the Fourth of July only two days away, many people are buying new American flags for the holiday, but what do you do with the old flag that you may have?

The answer lies in an old red mail box in Jonesborough.

If you have an old flag that needs to be retired you can place it in the special box located next door to the Jonesborough Post Office.

When the box is filled with old flags, the Town of Jonesborough's Flag Committee makes sure that each Stars and Stripes is given the respect that it deserves.

According to Ruth Verhegge, Chairperson of the Flag Committee, "In October we have a flag retirement ceremony that's conducted primarily by the Marine Corps Junior ROTC from Boone. They come out and they conduct this ceremony and it's a beautiful ceremony."

According to tradition, each flag that is retired is burned with hickory wood and the ashes that are left are then buried.
