Father allegedly sells daughter for bail money

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

Kingsport police say a man is behind bars for trying to sell his daughter in exchange for money to bond the child's mother out of jail.

Investigators say Shawn Hughes, 32, called his daughter's caretaker over the phone and repeatedly offered to sell his daughter. He told the caretaker that he would sign over legal custody of his daughter for $1500.

Police were present during each of the phone conversations between the caretaker and Hughes. The caretaker, under the direction of law enforcement, accepted Hughes' offer.

Hughes told the woman that he would be waiting for her in the parking lot of Eastman Credit Union on Wilcox Dr. and that he would be in a red truck. When police responded to Eastman Credit Union, Hughes was taken into custody.

Officers found on Hughes a small metal tube containing three round white pills, possibly Clonazepam, and two oblong yellow pills.

All of the items seized have been submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for testing.

Hughes was taken to the Kingsport City Jail and charged with illegal payments in connection with the placement of a child and two counts of drug possession.

Hughes and the child's mother were both arrested last Friday. Hughes bonded out Monday, but is now back in jail facing the latest charges.
