CARRBORO, N.C. -
Carrboro police arrested a man in connection with an early morning assault on Fidelity Street.
Officers arrested Francisco Diaz, 33, after he was accused of breaking into a home and sexually assaulting a woman shortly after 4am Friday.
"She was awakened by what she thought was her roommate walking in the apartment and didn't think anything of it," said Carrboro police Lt. Chris Atack.
"Then he assaulted her resulting in a sexual assault. She became fully awake at that point and he ran from the residence, " he said.
The attack stunned some neighborhood residents.
"It's pretty terrifying that something like that would happen," said a woman who asked we not use her name.
Police believe their suspect came in through an unsecured door.
"It was a rear door and we are not sure it was properly latched or not," said Lt. Atack.
One neighborhood resident says, a locked door is her first line of defense.
"If its random, just taking basic precautions is probably enough to deter someone; like locking your door," said Molly Murchison. "Maybe if your door is locked they would move on."
In the case of Friday morning's attack, police were able to capture the alleged attacker shortly after he fled.
Suspect Francisco Diaz was arrested after police found him hiding in woods along Fidelity Street.
Diaz is charged with attempted first degree rape, first degree burglary and sexual battery.
His bail was set at $100,000.
