JOHNSON CITY, TN- The Major League Baseball season is almost here.
Former Science Hill Hilltopper, Daniel Norris, will report to Detroit Tigers' spring training on Tuesday.
Norris is eying a bounce back 2018 season. Despite having the most starts in his major league career last year, Norris was plagued with injuries, bouncing back and forth between the minors and majors on rehab assignments. Norris finished the year with a 5-8 record and a career-high 5.31 ERA.
"Coming off probably my worst year yet, but I was hurt a lot," said Norris. "I think, for me, the main thing is to stay healthy. If I can stay healthy I know I can go out there and make adjustments. I hear it every day from pitching coaches, our catcher, stuff's there. I've got exactly what it takes to be the best I want to be, it's just a matter of staying healthy."
The Johnson City native threw off the mound for the first time this year at his annual pitching camp at RBI Tri-Cities in January. As the camp wrapped up, Norris told News Channel 11 Sports those pitches felt good and credits an offseason trip to the west coast.
"At the beginning of this offseason, I went out to California and trained for a month just to really try and get those injuries dialed in," said Norris. "I knew I needed to stay healthy this year and I'm going above and beyond to ensure that that happens."
The Tigers open the season at home on March 29th against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
