Truck crashes into Kingsport Walmart; family of 4 injured, released from hospital

UPDATE: Wellmont Health System officials confirmed that the two adults and two small children injured in a crash Tuesday evening have since been released from an area hospital.

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) - Kingsport Police Department officials confirmed a truck drove through the entrance of a local grocery store on West Stone Drive.

According to KPD spokesman Tom Patton, a full-size Dodge truck driven by 79-year-old Robert L. Waterman went through the entrance of Walmart, 2500 W. Stone Drive, around 6:45 p.m.

Waterman told police he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake as he was backing up from a parking space.

Police say a family of four including a father, mother, and two small children (18 months and 6 months old) were hit by the truck as they were exiting the store. All members of the family were transported to Holston Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Waterman was also transported to the hospital for evaluation.

There were barricade poles in place but, the truck was able to slip between two of the poles.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.
