Driver killed, one critically injured after FedEx truck overturns on I-81, lands on HWY 394

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -  Tennessee Highway Patrol confirms a man died after the FedEx truck he was driving overturned onto State Route 394 in Sullivan County.

Also, Tennessee Highway Patrol Sergeant Nathan Hall said another man was airlifted to Holston Valley Hospital.

A THP report identifies the driver as 75-year-old Joseph Cowden, of Blaysburgh, PA.

His passenger, 54-year-old Christopher Cifolilli is listed in critical condition. We are told that he has head trauma.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation reports the crash happened on Interstate 81 at exit 69 around  7:04 a.m. on Wednesday.

THP says the truck was traveling north when it went into the grass median, went airborne and struck a bridge and landed on the state highway.

State troopers report the truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash.  Highway 394 near the interstate was closed for several hours.

We are told the truck is from Pennsylvania. The truck recently traveled to Nashville and was headed back to Pennsylvania.

Investigators are working to determine the events leading up to the crash.
