KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Starbucks' iconic pumpkin spice latte is getting a revamp. The international coffee chain announced its plan Monday to reformulate the recipe to include real pumpkin purée.
"We have been trying to keep a lid on some big news for the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte, but with recipes and ingredients starting to ship to our stores, the buzz is building," Starbucks said in its announcement Monday. "What's the big deal? After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago."
The new and improved pumpkin spice latte will be made with real pumpkin and without caramel coloring.
The recipe includes the following ingredients:
- Pumpkin spice flavored sauce (sugar, condensed skim milk, pumpkin purée, 2% or less of fruit and vegetable juice for color, natural flavors, annatto — color, potassium sorbate — preservative)
- Whipped cream
- Starbucks vanilla syrup
- Pumpkin spice topping (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove).
Changes to the fall favorite drink came after blogger Vani Hari — known as the Food Babe — criticized Starbucks for its lack of transparency around the drink's ingredients.
Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has called the pumpkin spice latte the company's "most popular seasonal beverage ever." In 2013, he said sales were as strong "despite the proliferation of knockoffs and copycats."The Associated Press contributed to this report
