Officials: Kidnapped 11-year-old girl found dead

By Associated Press and KRQE News 13 - SHIPROCK, N.M. (AP/KRQE) – The Navajo Nation and the FBI have confirmed the 11-year-old girl abducted near Shiprock has been found dead.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers and volunteers have been scouring the area between Shiprock and Red Valley, Arizona for 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike since Monday afternoon.

Investigators believe the girl was taken along a road near Fruitland just outside of Shiprock around 4 p.m. Monday, along with her 9-year-old brother. Officials say the two were on their way home from school.

According to Facebook posts from a woman claiming to be Ashlynne's mother, the kidnapper let the boy go near the Arizona state line. She also says the abductor lured the kids into his van, promising to take them to a movie.

The FBI says they have no reason to believe the girl was taken by someone she knew.

According to Facebook, the girl's brother also said the man who took them was Native American and driving a maroon van.

News Channel 11's KRQE News 13 is still working to get a better description of the van, and will provide updates.
