Hawkins County Humane Society offers "Home for the Holidays" foster program

HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - A local animal shelter is giving dogs and cats a place to stay this holiday season.

The Hawkins County Humane Society created a "Home for the Holidays" program.

It's a foster program that allows you to keep a dog or cat now through Christmas, giving animals a temporary place to stay outside of the shelter.

This is the first year of the program and it's been a big hit so far.

Employees say all you do is fill out an application and you will be matched with an animal that fits your personality or home style.

"You just take them home for as long as you want, how many days and then you can bring them back whenever you want or just decide to adopt them," said employee Kennedy Margetjack.

Kadence Scialdo said she is excited to foster a dog.

"I decided to do this because I think dogs should be out of the shelter for the holidays," she said.

So far, 25 dogs and one cat have been in a foster home in this program.

The humane society estimates that 3/4 of them will be adopted.
