Surgoinsville cemetery damage may have been unintentional

Caretakers of the New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Surgoinsville first noticed damage to more than 70 headstones in mid July.Surgoinsville Police Chief, James Hammonds, said after observing the damage, which appeared to be caused by a steel brush, he developed a suspect after an internet search produced pictures taken at the cemetery.Hammonds said the suspect in the case said he had been trying to research some of the grave markers some of which date back to the 1700's.Hammonds ... Red Cross: 32 East TN homes destroyed in Sunday tornado outbreak


The American Red Cross says 32 homes were destroyed in a severe weather outbreak that hit East Tennessee last Sunday.The National Weather Service said two EF-1 tornadoes hit Washington and Sullivan Counties.
